Preventing Plumbing Emergencies

Preventing Plumbing Emergencies

Water overflowing your toilet, burst pipes, a busted plumbing fixture, there are obvious plumbing emergencies, and some plumbing emergencies can wait until the next day. How to determine that can be a challenge for the average home or business owners. Today, Craig’s Plumbing will assist you in knowing the difference between them to help you avoid 24/7 emergency plumbing costs, if you can.

Restaurant Plumbing Emergencies

In a 24 hour town, more restaurants than the average city are open and running 24 hours a day. If you don’t have access to hot water, this in itself constitutes a plumbing emergency. Washing your hands or dishes isn’t an option without hot water to do so. Same goes for weekends and holidays. Your business can’t run without certain materials, and hot water is a big one.

How to Determine if it can Wait

There are ways to determine if your plumbing issue can wait a while or if a plumber needs to be called out immediately. In the case of not having hot water in a restaurant, that is a no-brainer, but assessing the urgency of your repair can save you a lot of money before you make the call. Take these following steps to determine whether your plumbing emergency can wait, or if you really must call a 24 hour plumber to your property.

Can the Water be Shut Off?

In most emergency plumbing instances water is gushing out of a broken fixture, such as a sink, faucet or pipe. In this instance there should be a water shut off nearby. If you can’t identify where to shut the water off at, your best bet is to shut if off directly at the meter itself. At the very least this will buy you some time, and save you from wasting water.

Locate the Issue

While many plumbing problems may be able to wait until the next day, locating the issue is your first step. If it’s a toilet problem, simply not flushing until the next day may be an option. Kitchen sink clogged, try using the bathroom, or vice versa. This isn’t a long term resolution, but should get you through a day, maybe even two, if you can manage without the plumbing item for that long.

In the instance that a main line, sewer or service line break, don’t just assume that the responsibility is yours to manage. We suggest contacting your local water company. If the responsibility falls on their property, they may come out to respond to your emergency situation, or cover some of the repair costs.

Make the Call

Ultimately it is your discretion that determines the severity of a plumbing emergency. Perhaps you only have one toilet, or you have an off shift. Contact a local Las Vegas emergency plumbing company that you trust to resolve your plumbing problem. They should tell you their rate before dispatching someone to your house, and should provide you with a timeline for anticipating an arrival. While a full explanation of services won’t happen until they evaluate your plumbing emergency, it is standard to quote the rate to a property owner to ensure there are no surprises.
